The waiter becomes the teacher

by Mr. Sheehy

Unable to track completely the comments directed his way, unable by principle to hide behind his own voice and a podium, unable to address questions as fully as they deserve, the teacher flees to the kitchen. Pausing for breath, exchanging wit with the dishwasher, flipping, catching, and filling a glass, he throws himself back to the dining room with a smile and four glasses of Coke in one hand.

He will do what he can, wearing his napkin straight and a clean(ish) shirt, but on his best days, he’s doesn’t exist; mostly it’s up to them whether they’ll enjoy this meal.
